Research On English Teaching Materials For Police Majors

With the development of social economy and frequent worldwide communication, China plays a more and more important role in the world. The communicative competence of police with English has become an important standard for deciding police's qualification of a country. It will decide its figure in international affairs. The English teaching in police school takes the task of developing students' communicative ability with English in order to meet higher demands of police work.Police English is used by police to investigate, do criminal technology analysis and deal with all kinds of cases involved with foreigners. It plays a core role to safeguard the dignity of Chinese law, serve the people, carry out foreign communication and the role of Chinese police troops in international affairs. However, most of police have poor communicative ability with English, which greatly affects the efficiency of plice work. It is caused by several reasons. Confusedly used police English textbook is protruding.The paper started from ESP and its need analysis theory. Then got to know information about the present situation and study need of English used in police organs and the students in police school by making questionaire and talking survey among them. Based on the data of questionaire and the result of talking, the paper evaluated commonly used police English textbooks. The results show that most of learners are interested in police English learning. But the development of police English are far behind. At present, there is not universal teaching syllabus, teaching methods or teaching and research organization in order to give effective guidance to police English teaching. It is found that present police English textbooks are differently poor in poor type, outdated and not authentic material, difficulty arrangement, subjective casualty in textbook choosing, exercise settlement and so on. All the shortcomings caused ineffective police English teaching in certain degree.According to these, the paper emghasized to give pieces of advice on the improvement of English textbook in order to make police English teaching better.
