The two translation strategies of "domestication" and "foreignization" were put forward by Venuti in recent decades, but similar concepts have long existed in both China and the West.Advocators for each translation strategy could be found at home and abroad, and one strategy may overweight the other during different periods of time.At present, many experts have attempted to make a choice between the two,but failed in finding a proper solution.Functionalist approach in translation, especially its core theory-Skopostheorie,may serve as the guidance to make a choice between the two strategies.Skopostherie contains three important rules:skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule.American novel,Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, remains popular in China for decades.Up to now, there are at least seven Chinese versions on market.Fu Dong-hua's version is the earliest and also the most controversial one, known for its application of domestication. The other Chinese version that is chosen in this study is translated by Huang Huai-ren and Zhu You-ruo,who aimed to bring the reader a novel, faithful to the original.Based on the case study of the two Chinese versions at various levels of words, phrases, sentences and discourses, Skopostherie is applied to analyze the choice of domestication and foreignization. In translation practice, the target reader and the skopos should be analyzed before a specific translation strategy is chosen.Whichever strategy can satisfy the translation skopos or purpose should be adopted in translating practice.
