This dissertation takes modal adverbial "ke" as the target of research of modern Chinese. Based on the Three-Plane Theory, the author makes a through investigation of ke by means of combining linguistic form with meanings, statues with analysis, transverse with longitudinal. The author probes into and analyzes the semantic that ke conveys, the syntactic expression and the pragmatic function that ke possess. The whole dissertation consists of four parts besides conclusion. The concrete contents are as following:Chapter One is the preface, which the purpose and the meaning of the research, the train of thought, and the method of the research, and summarizes the state of predecessors' research and introduces of sources of corpus. From Chapter Two to Chapter Four, characteristics of ke are thoroughly analyzed on semantics, syntax and pragmatics aspects from synchronic level. In Chapter Two,the semantics of ke is described.Since the dictionary definitions of ke have some problems, the author find out the semantic features of ke:[+ transition],[+ emphasize],[+question]based on the theory of semantic features.According to the differences of semantic features on distribution,ke is divided into ke1,ke and ke3.Then the author study on their semantic orientation analysis and find out some rules. What's more, the author go father on the semantic features both on common features and special features of ke. Semantic orientation analysis on ke is the core of the chapter, and also a foundation of the discussion in the whole dissertation.Chapter Three mainly describes the syntactic features of X among ke+X structure, the syntactic distribution and attribute ofke and ke+X.Referring to 1016 sentences screening from the CCL corpus, the author generalized several kinds of X,including adjective structure, verb structure, auxiliary verb, other adverbial words and negative structure. The author also describes the elements that accompany by ke,such as other adverbials, modal particles at the end of sentences, and some fix-structures.When it comes to pattern,ke always appeared with SHI sentence and BA sentence.Situation of ke is different on the different of part of speech of shi.Ke also have different meaning in different position in BA sentence. All of these could illustrate by semantics orientation of ke. Chapter Four focus on the Pragmatics, observing ke under different contexts and genres. According to the 1016 sentences,ke1 mainly distribute in declarative sentence, some time in imperative sentence and exclamatory sentences;ke2 mainly distribute in exclamatory sentences; k3 entirely distribute in interrogative sentence. The function of modal adverbial could account for the distribution. In agreement to the semantic features of ke,it is hard to find the word in written Chinese, such as official documents and news on papers. This chapter also summarizes the function of subjective commenting(ke1,ke2,ke3),highlighting the focus(ke1,ke2,ke3),and conveying the mood(ke2,ke3) on ke.Finally, subjective quantities of ke1,ke2 and ke3 are discussed. The conclusion summarizes the whole dissertation and points out the deficiencies of the study.
