The Chaotic Characteristics Of Target Text Quality In Translation Services

This thesis attempts to research the target text quality within the context of professional commercial translation services.The target text quality has been a bottleneck in translation services for years in China severely hampering the development of translation businesses and industry as well.Negative voices on it from different circles are heard from time to time.So far most studies by academics on target text quality have been limited to literary translations and little research has been done on the actual process in translation services.On the basis of detailed observations of the quality process of a typical translation company,the factors affecting target text quality are identified and divided into three categories:factors on the side of clients,factors on the side of translation companies,and other factors.Then,by taking the quality process as a system which is subject to the analysis of the theory of chaos,the present thesis makes a detailed analysis of the characters of dynamicity,instability and unpredictability of those three categories of variable factors within the framework of the theory of chaos.The descriptive-explanatory approach in combination with due exemplification leads to a conclusion that target text quality is chaotic as the output of the system of quality process.Finally,it is suggested that the variables should be regulated so as to effectively improve the target text quality.
