Cultural education is of vital importance in teaching Chinese as a second language. While the theoretical research on cultural education is abundant in the recent twenty years, there is a lack of scientific investigation and empirical research. A vacancy still remains for quantitative analysis of cultural items in the intermediate intensive textbooks,which influences directly on the standardization of cultural education in the intermediate stage.Adopting related theories from lingustics, educational science, psychology, culturology, intercultural communication, this thesis selects two sets of representative Chinese intermediate intensive textbooks as samples to form the statistical data, analyzing the cultural items systematically from lexical items that carry the most social and cultural features, and from other forms of linguistic items such as speech function,phonology,Chinese characters,and discourse as well.This thesis investigates the amount and distribution of cultural items and makes an qualitative and quantitative anylysis of them on the basis of lexical syllabus.Based on the research results, this thesis concludes that the current textbooks,though conforms basically to the teaching principle of combining language and culture together,is lacking in scientific and systematic cultural introduction.Some cultural items are outdated that students could be misled.Besides, the manner of cultural introduction is not of diversity,which restricts the effects.The thesis attempts to explore the feasible and scientific manner of of cultural introduction in the hope that it will shed somelight on the compilation of intermediate intensive textbooks and teaching methods.
