Deconstructionism Approach To Translation Of Language Fuzziness

Ever since 1965 when the expert of Cybernetics, L. A. Zadeh from Electrical Engineering Department of California University proposed his theory of "fuzzy sets" on Information and Control, fuzzy theory has been widely used in various academic fields.Scholars both at home and abroad have made great efforts to the study of language fuzziness which mainly includes the exploration of language fuzziness itself and its connection with other subjects. The study of translation has been greatly influenced by the theory of language fuzziness. More and more approaches have been introduced to deal with the treatment of language fuzziness in translation. The perspective of deconstructive translation approach which has been paid great attention to in recent years is an effective way to save the aesthetic of language fuzziness in the process of translation.Deconstructionism, which is also known as Post-Structuralism, is put forward by Jacques Derrida and other deconstructionists. As the subversion of structuralism, it systematically overthrew the theories of structure and meaning proposed by structuralists. The fuzziness of natural language is closely connected with deconstructive translation, while the reflection on translation theory and practice proposed by deconstructionism is influenced by language fuzziness. Deconstructive translation provides feasible reference for the settlement of language fuzziness in translation; while the theory of language fuzziness serves as a potent evidence for deconstructive translation.This thesis tries to discuss the treatment of language fuzziness in translation from the perspective of deconstructive translation approach. Taking the English version of Three Kingdoms translated by Moss Roberts as the example, this thesis is an attempt to explore the explanatory power of deconstructive translation over the treatment of language fuzziness. There are altogether four parts of this thesis:The first part makes a general introduction of language fuzziness, including its concept, characteristics, historical and present research on language fuzziness both in and abroad; comparison of Chinese fuzziness and English fuzziness, the ablation of aesthetic of language fuzziness in translation, and so on. Because of the diversities between English culture and Chinese culture, the aesthetic feelings of language fuzziness would be inevitably ablated in the process of translation. Therefore, it is significant for the translators to save the lost aesthetic feelings of language fuzziness.In the second part, the analysis of translation of fuzzy language is combined with the theory of deconstructionism. This chapter first introduces deconstructionism and deconstructive translation; then expatiates the relationship between deconstructionism and language fuzziness, including the theory of language fuzziness as the evidence for deconstructive translation and the solutions of deconstructive translation for the treatment of fuzzy language.The third part combines translation practice with analysis of the explanatory power of deconstructive translation over the treatment of language fuzziness. Deconstructive translation approach is positive for the preservation of the aesthetic feelings of language fuzziness in the process of translation. This chapter first discusses the fuzzy expressions of the image descriptions in Three Kingdoms and then analyzes the typical images in Three Kingdoms by dividing the characters into several groups.Beside its contribution to the translation of fuzzy language, deconstructionism has greatly influenced the temporary translation studies. Although deconstructive translation has some defects as its theoretical system has not been mature yet, its contribution to the study of translation can not be ignored. In the last part, a brief introduction and evaluation of deconstruction translation theory, including its advantages and limitations, is provided.
