The development of American shopping malls has been more than a hundred years. The 1950s and 1960s were the golden age of American economic development after World Warâ…¡, in this context, malls of America developed with high speed. Shopping malls play an important role in the modern American business economics and the daily lives of Americans; it is an important place in which the Americans fulfill their consumer values, and has become one of the carriers of modern American consumer culture.This thesis selects the period from 1950s to 1970s when malls of America developed prosperously, and emphasizes the rise and characteristics of the shopping malls, especially reasons and effects of shopping mall's prosperity. To a certain extent, this study can reflect American economy, socio-cultural and urban development situation after World Warâ…¡.This article contains three parts. They are preface, text and conclusion. The text is divided into three parts.In the preface, the academic value and practical meaning of the study is firstly introduced, present research situation including foreign and domestic is reviewed. It makes clear about feasibility and necessity. The basic clue and outline of the paper is introduced in this part.The first chapter summarizes the developmental stages of American shopping mall and its characteristics. The author divides the history into three stages. Further, each stage has its own characteristics. This article especially analysis the performance of the prosperous stage.The second chapter mainly analysis the reasons for American shopping mall's flourishing. The development of modern shopping malls is compatible with the level of economic development of a nation or a region. Good economic development momentum in the United States during 1950s and 1960s as well as related tax incentives has provided solid material foundation for American shopping malls. American housing and population suburbanization wave after World Warâ…¡has sounded the prelude for the thriving of shopping malls. The unique car culture and the mass consumer culture have laid a broad social base for the shopping mall's development. Meanwhile, includes other favorable factors.The third chapter further analyzes and discusses the influence of American shopping mall's prosperity. In some degree, shopping malls thriving in the suburbs have changed the layout of the retail space in metropolis.Multi-function service of the modern shopping mall made it become the new center of shopping, leisure and entertainment, which provide more choices for people.Furthermore, prosperity and development of shopping malls has also led to an extensive discuss on urban public space.Whether shopping malls belong to a public space? By analyzing the nature of shopping malls, the author finally concluded that the shopping mall was a privatization and commercialization of public space, and compared to the traditional urban public space, it has its unique character.The conclusion part has a comprehensive evaluation on the historical status of American shopping malls, basing on the previous text. Meanwhile, emphasized the American shopping mall with its management style, operation mode and design innovations, also introduces the reference value and significance of shopping malls to other countries or regions, as well as China's metropolitan.
