In Chinese, the "Not A Not B" structure is common, and many scholars have made reseaches on this structure in contemporary Chinese. However, we have seen little research in modern Chinese. This thesis chooses the typical "Not A Not B" structure from eight pieces of works of art in Ming and Qing Dynasties,respectively, Three Kingdoms, Gods, Jin Ping Mei, Journey to the West, Dream of Red Mansions, The Scholars, The Record of Revelation of Officialdom and Hero Legend of Son and Daughter.In the study,analysis is made about the structure, semantic relations, syntactic function and pragmatics. A systematic analysis is also made about the structure of" Not A Not B " from diachronic view. In addition,the study compares the differences of" Not A Not B " structure between Ming and Qing Dynasties and Modern Chinese. Specifically, the thesis is divided into six parts:introduction, analysis on structure of "Not A Not B", analysis on syntactic function of" Not A Not B " structure, semantic analysis on " Not A Not B " structure, pragmatic analysis on." Not A Not B " structure, the development of" Not A Not B " structure in Ming and Qing Dynasties.The introduction involves in research content, research purpose, research status, significance and research methods, corpus sources and so on.Structure analysis on " Not A Not B "includes the materials of A and B, the nature of A and B, the relationships within this form. There are abundant materials used as "A"and "B",such as morphemes, words or phrases, amang which monosyllabic morphemes are given priority.Acording to grammar nature of A and B, adjective morphemes or words are chosen in most cases, followed by the verb. The main structure of" Not A Not B " is parallel form.In syntactic function analysis of" Not A Not B ", we study the syntactic function of the " Not A Not B " structure in a single sentence and when it is a small sentence.It is shown that " Not A Not B " structure is normolly used in the form of a small sentence. It can also be predicate, adverbial, attributive, and less likely be complement, object, subject.The semantic analysis on " Not A Not B " structure includes the analysis on relations of meaning between "A" and "B" and its semantic model. In view of the meaning relations between "A" and "B", we divide it into four types:similar, opposite, relevant and logical relations. Based on it, we study the logical semantic models of "Not A Not B ".After investigation,we find that, the meaning relationship between "A" and "B" is mainly relevant,similar and opposite. The semantic model of "Not A Not B" structure usually shows "Neither A nor B ".In the part of the pragmatic analysis on " Not A Not B " structure,we study its language style and emotion color. "Not A Not B" usually appears in spoken language. Its common emotional color is neutral, derogatory sense goes second and commendatory sense goes last.On the development of "Not A Not B" in Ming and Qing Dynasties, through diachronic investigation, we have a deeper understanding about its development situation. we know it is a syntactic structure evolving since the appearance of Chinese.However,there are some differences in using this structure between Ming and Qing Dynasties and contemporary age.
