Taiwan Issue In The Development Of ASEAN-CHINA Relationship

Abbreviated as ASEAN, the Association of South-east Asian Nations is very active in Asian Pacific region. It is a regional cooperation organization with unique impact upon regional affairs. The relation between ASEAN and china has experienced some twists and turns. Both sides have already established 揻acing the 21 ~ century good-neighborly mutual trust partnership? Taiwan issue has long been a sensitive factor in developing the relation between both parties. Taiwan authorities endeavor to develop substantial relation with ASEAN countries and some ASEAN assume an ambiguous attitude towards it. The official or semi-official contacts between them have never been ceasing, which produces negative effects upon the traditional relationship between ASEAN and China. It is worth noting that, after the south-east Financial Crisis broke out in 1997, some new changes took place in the relationship between Taiwan and ASEAN countries. Based on the theory of dialectical materialism and historical materialism, the author intends to explore Taiwan issue in terms of economy, politics and safety within the scope of ASEAN and China relation. The paper pays particular attention to the studies of new situations and new problems arising from the Asian Financial Crisis, and poses countermeasures we should adopt in order to maintain the unity of our motherland.
