The research on land use change is an important field in the global changes study. In order to study the land use change, the technologies of remote sensing and geographical information system were used to analyze the spatial pattern and its spatial temporal changes of land use in recent ten years, China. At first, based on the two-period TM images of China as basic information resource and with support of ARCGIS, we built the spatial information database and divided the landscape types of land use in China into six main types and twenty-six sub-types. Then the land use classification information was been extracted from the raster database of 1:100000 scales resource, with which we studied the spatial pattern of land use in China. Secondly, the mathematical methodology from landscape-ecology, including: the landscape diversity index, the landscape dominant index, the landscape homogeneity index and the landscape broken index, was introduced into our analysis and developed for study on spatial pattern and spatial-temporal changes of China land use. According to these landscape indexes of spatial patterns, we can easily analyze the interference degree caused by human activities. In our results, the landscape diversity index, landscape dominant index, landscape homogeneity index and landscape broken index show regularity in spatial- temporal distribution. We could say that the landscape-ecology method would greatly contribute to the land use change driven mechanism research.
