Study On The Medium-sized Cities And The Regional Development In The Eastern And Southern Regions Of Sichuan Province In The 20～(th) Century

A systematically demonstrative analysis is made in this article for the developing characteristics concerning the main four periods, three regions and nine medium-sized cities in the eastern and southern regions of Sichuan province in the 20th century, and the reason for the lagging city development in these periods is explored. In the first half of the 20th century, the lagging development in industry and commerce, the low efficiency of niter-city division of work, and other passive factors impeded the early modernization of the medium-sized cities in the eastern and southern regions of Sichuan province. After PRC foundation, many heavy industry enterprises were relocated and new ones were established in the eastern and southern regions of Sichuan province, which were the strategic hinterland of China construction. Although the new and the traditional industry collaborated to promote to the city development, there existed a fluctuation regarding city development due to the unstable macroeconomic environment. After reform and opening-up in 1979, a step by step strategy for regional development being carried forward, the medium-sized cities in the eastern and southern regions of Sichuan province fell behind the cities in eastern China, in addition, the contradictions of industrial structure featuring the heavy industry being the major part in the industrial structure impeded the development of medium-sized cities in the eastern and southern regions of Sichuan province. Based on a long time-span research, the strategic measures for the development of the medium-sized cities in the eastern andsouthern regions of Sichuan province in the new century are put forward, that are these medium-sized city should actively participate in the development of western regions and the development of Changjiang economic zone,fully absorb the advanced experience from the development of eastern coastal area, make big efforts in system innovation, ameliorate the regional city system and promote the regional development in harmony.
