A Reconfigurable Manufacturing System (RMS) is defined at outset for rapid change in structure, as well as in hardware and software components, in order to quickly adjust production capacity and function within a part of family in response to sudden changes in market. It offers economically better solution over traditional systems by providing exactly the capacity and functionality where and when it is needed over a production family' life cycle.RMS are designed to evolve over time to adapt to demand changes andproduction variations in a manner that minimizes over cost. The theory and methodfor RMS is systematically studied in the dissertation combined with the Nation 863Project in the field of RMS whose title is "study on the properties of RMS(2001AA412160) ". The main study contents are following:Based on the analysis of present status of manufacturing industry in our country, the significance of the research subject is expounded. The present status of study on RMS is analyzed and the main study contents are summarized. The merits of RMS over traditional manufacturing systems are analyzed from the view of economics. The effects of RMS such as scale economy, scope economy, economies of speed, agglomeration economy are pointed out. The effect of RMS on the productivity of enterprises is analyzed. The cost of RMS is analyzed. It is divided into fixed cost and operation cost.A basic model of cost for a single-production fixed-demand (SPFD) case is developed by fixed cost and operation cost. The optimal configuration is analyzed in SPFD, the configuration generation problem for SPFD cases is an optimization to select appropriate station performing all the required operations without violation any constraints. The scalability and line balancing of RMS is analyzed. Based on scalability the manufacturing abilities of RMS are analyzed. The relation of different configurations is presented by study of configuration similarity. The conclusions of this dissertation are presented and the future research works are put forward.
