China joined WTO in Dec.2001. This brings China with great chances as well as challenges. We must take advantage of the development opportunity that the world and the home markets bring to us. At the same time, we must cope with the fierce competition of the two markets. It is a very important issue for Chinese agriculture to choose the development method and to establish the strategy. This issue has an important bearing on Chinese economy's continuous development. Systematically, this essay states, compares and analyzes the theories of current agricultural industry development from its structure, including Large-scale economy theory Comparative superiority theory Essential factor natural endowment theory Agricultural increase theory Sustainable development theory. It lays a theoretical foundation for Chinese agriculture development. The paper analyzes the present status, the basic structure, comparative advantage and competitive disadvantage of Chinese agriculture industry through those theories. It is argued that: less cultivated land per head is our disadvantage but more labour force is our advantage. Further more, the products of intensive labour force and technology, that of area superiority are also our comparative advantage. On the basis of these theories, the paper puts forward the whole thought and suggests the following 4 basic strategies for Chinese agriculture development: (l)Reinforce governmental support to agriculture; (2)Quicken the adjustment of agriculture structure ; (3)Advance the process of agricultural industrialization; (4)Strengthen the building of agricultural standardization.
