In the 21st century, with the integration of global economy and rise of the knowledge economy, the city becomes more important and the competition among the cities gets fiercer. In the face of the common opportunity and general development problems, every municipal government of china urgently needs to understand and master the key factors that determine and influence city competency in the globalization era, need to clarify its own position and situation, advantage and deficiency, and need to make the new competition and development strategy, to try to maximize interests and the obtain fastest development, and to realize the development in an all-round way of the city.This thesis, by combining domestic and international studies of urban competitiveness , taking urban competitiveness of Lanzhou as the main thread, using the method of combining qualitative and quantitative analyses, describing analyses and real example analyses, and centering on competitiveness theme, carries on an overall understanding and definition to urban competitiveness concept, intension, characteristic at first. Thus the solid theoretical foundation of the positive research has been established. Then, the index system about urban competitiveness has been set up by using the dictionary order law. And 11 provincial capitals in the west are chosen to appraise the competitiveness. Through the competitiveness comparative analysis between cities, Lanzhou city urban advantage and deficiency of competitiveness have been found out. Then the thought of promoting its urban competitiveness has been raise up.The body of this thesis includes 3 parts:Part one is theoretical foundation of the study of urban competitiveness, which gives the definition of competitiveness and analyses of domestic and international urban theory and study model of competitiveness and summarizes its characteristic.Part two is the comparative analysis and appraisal of the urban competitiveness of Lanzhou city. This part mainly provides the evaluation index system of urban competitiveness; appraise method, and the overall appraisal of urban competitiveness of Lanzhou city.Part three is the main study of countermeasures of promoting the urban competitiveness of Lanzhou, which, on the basis of above analyses, focus on proposing the guidelines, strategic way, and the suggestion of countermeasure that can promote the competitiveness of Lanzhou.In the course of writing this thesis, the main idea of the thesis is firmly round the themeof the urban competitiveness. Through the qualitative analysis and quantitative appraisal, thethesis provides a comparatively and objective overall understanding to the urbancompetitiveness of Lanzhou, This can be an effective scientific basis for responsibledepartment of the municipal government to make a plan.
