Today when the cold war has ended and new world structure has gradually taken shape, Chinese cause of modernization is entering the critical stage. Making a correct assessment of the situation,widening the space of thinking and learning widely from others' strong points in light of national conditions in front of new challenges and opportunities are important conditions for China to rise to the advanced level of the world in the near future. After the end of the cold war, the general trend of the world situation is relaxation. Developing economy and enhancing comprehensive national power is a primary concern of all countries. The influence of international situation on world economic environment and the economic status of all countries is obvious. On the one hand, the economy of East Asia has enjoyed continuous and rapid development. On the other, the economic status of Japan, as the important tractor of the economic development of this region, has suffered the pain of crisis due to the change of international situation and its own contradictions. Though East Asia encountered financial crisis in 1997, quite a few countries and areas have walked out the shadow of the crisis. The rapid development of East Asia after the end of cold war still has the value of research. Its development mode has not be completely negated. The recovery of the economy of East Asia, the crisis of Japan and the continuous and rapid development of China have caused the change of the comparison of the economic power of East Asian countries. Therefore, the opinions on the problems faced by Japan, the prediction of Japan's position and role in East Asian economy in the future and the prospect of Sino-Japan economic cooperation will arouse people's attention. This article reviews Japan's position and role in East Asian economy by analyzing the rapid development of East Asian economy and the challenges faced by Japan and its reform. It further analyzes the prospect of Sino-Japan economic cooperation and summarizes some enlightenment in respect of the way to promote the cause of Chinese modernization with the funds, technologies and market of Japan, the No.1 economic power in East Asia. This article expounds this subject in five chapters. Chapter 1 expounds the East Asian economy in development. The rapid development of East Asian economy after the end of cold war is an outstanding characteristic of world economy. It expounds the main aspects of the economic development of East Asia, the internal and external causes for the rapid development of East Asian economy, the problems existing in the development of East Asian economy, the historic and practical significance of the development of East Asian economy. Chapter 2 expounds two apparent changes of Asia Pacific economy after the end of cold war, i.e., the rapid development of East Asian economy and the further deepening of the friction between Japan and U.S.A. On the one hand, the challenge of rapidly developing East Asian economy to Japan and the rise of developing countries of East Asia have apparently changed the economic situation of East Asia. The economic relationship between Japan and East Asian countries is experiencing qualitative change. On the other, the deepening of the economic friction between Japan and U.S.A. and the competition between them in extensive economic fields have presented great challenges to the economic position of Japan. The challenge of such change to Japan and its response will decide its economic position in Asia Pacific region in the future. Meanwhile, this chapter expounds the adjustment made by Japan to its internal and external policies when facing the material change of international economy. Analyzed from historic perspective, Japanese economy is in a new stage of adjustment. The disorder occurred during the exploration and reform of Japan has not destroyed its economic foundation.
