On China's modern history and New China's diplomatic history, no one emphasizes like Mr. Deng Xiaoping on the principle of national interest. He expresses his view as this: "In consideration of the relationship between nations, the strategic interest of the nation should be highly stressed. We should pay more attention on our long-term strategic interest, and respect the interest of the other side as well. We should not think too much of the differences of the ideological interest of the social systems. All countries, no matter small or big, weak of strong, should respect each other. And be treated equally. If so, no problems cannot be well settled." This view is great guiding significance in protecting national interest of China and on making choices of diplomatic strategy. Only when a nation's basic interest and strategic interest are assured, can it gain the qualification to coexist peacefully with other nations, and can it have the right to protect its state sovereignty. And so, to take our national interest as the most important principle should be our action principle in dealing with complicated international relations of deferent countries, and with some contingent international events. This paper starts from defining the concept of national interest, re-examines the realistic national interest of China in the post Cold War era through investigating the relationship between the evolution of the national interest in the Cold Wartimes and the adjustment of diplomatic strategy, and finally discusses the diplomatic strategy of China in the 21st century. This paper is composed of three parts:The first part analyzes the national interest of China during the Cold War and the adjustment of her diplomatic strategy. On the one hand, through investigating the diplomatic strategy of China during the Cold War, it can be known that the source behind the adjustment of diplomatic strategy is the evolution of the national interest structure. "Leaning to One Side" policy is carefully made and established by the Chinese Communist Party in terms of her dozens of years past experience, especially according to new national interest of China and ideological interest, by analyzing and comparing the attitudes and policies of America and the Soviet Union in China's revolution and on New China. "Opposing to Both" is, to a certain extend, illusory ideological interest. This policy wins great achievements for China's diplomacy, but there are also some regretful or even distressed errors----the great opportunity of high economic growth over the world of this period and the opportunity for self-development is missed. "One Line" policy is set up for the purpose of making use of the contradiction between America and the Soviet Union to make great strategic interest of China. As a result, the scale invasion, in the one hand, by the Soviet Union is prevented, and in the other hand, China opens her door to the United States, and opens up a vast vista for cooperation between China and western countries. The policy of maintaining independence and peaceful diplomacy which began in the late 1970s takes economic interest as the cost of the national interest. It goes beyond the ideological interest and attaches importance on economic development. In the international affairs, China adopts non-aligned policy in this period, seeking no hegemony, and hiding light as her diplomatic strategy. On the second hand, the other makes an appraisement of the diplomatic strategy of new China during the Cold War. The diplomatic strategy during the Cold War has its intrinsic consistency—it takes the national interest as its basic starting point all along. The understanding of the main national interest is basically in line with the objective situation at that time, and the international status of China has made steady improvement, so it is successful on the whole. However, the diplomatic strategy during the Cold War is not very perfect, for example, sometimes, the judgment on the international situation is not so correct and the d...
