The Study Of Sustainable Development Index System Of Town In China

With the rapid development of science and economy since the twentieth century, man's capability to control the nature has been greatly improved. In the progress of material civilization, man has made much negative effect on ecology. As soon as the concept of sustainable development is given, it has been agreed on across the world as the common goal of mankind progress. During the practice of the concept, the core of the urgent problem is to make an evaluation of sustainable development. It is demanded to make a periodical and quantitative evaluation of the level, capacity and tendency of sustainable development on the basis of the scientific and consistent target system of sustainable development.Sustainability of the town is a comprehensive concept that is often considered in terms of several components—economic, environmental ecological, social and cultural. At present, the measurement and assessment of sustainable development of the town, the related planning and decision making are in principal more qualitative rather than quantitative. In this paper, the literatures on sustainable development indicators are reviewed, in which several typical methodologies have detailed descriptions. The paper build the sustainable development index system of the town with the Analytic Hierarchy Process from three aspects: economic, social,resource and environmental ecological and gave a synthetically judgment, by the situation of China after summarizing the sustainable development indicators of the city of China and other countries. Finally a pilot study is done by choosing the local sustainable development indicators of Fengdu Country,and evaluate the sustainable development complexion. The investigation indicates that the local sustainability can be measured more efficiently and accurately using indicators and evaluation system. The methodology of choosing indicators and the evaluation system can be used in other areas.
