Objective: To evaluate the common daily hassles and the level of psychological stress in military medical students, and explore the relationship of the causes and results of daily hassles, coping style, self-esteem, and trait anxiety with depression. Methods: A daily hassles rating scale in military medical students (DHRS-MMS) was developed whereby the subjects were tested in combination with psychological assessment using the center for epidemiologic studies depression scale (CES-D), trait anxiety inquiry(TAI), coping style questionnaire(CSQ) and self-esteem scale(SES). Data were analyzed by SPSS 10.0 program. Results and Conclusions: (1 ) The developed DHRS-MMS consists of 43 items, which can be divided into six parts including adaptation, loss, economy, acquaintance, learning and job. DHRS-MMS had good reliability and validity and can be used as the quantification implements for the preliminary investigation of psychological stress extent and the differentiation of daily hassles in military medical students. ( 2 ) The formed district norm and critical score on DHRS-MMS can be used as one of the reference targeted values for preliminary screening of psychological interference objects. (3 ) The main daily hassles are adaptation and learning in military medical students. There are different daily hassles between students with regard to grade, sex, where they came from (urban or rural areas), training type and whether they lived independently or not. (4) During the course of psychological stress, daily hassles resulted in not only direct stressful mood reaction, for example depression, but also indirect individual depression by negative coping styles. The alternative of positive or negative coping styles are directly influenced by the personality of self-esteem and trait anxiety.
