As the physical carrier of the cities, urban spatial structure is the spatial reflection of urban social economic life. The recent 25 years since the beginning of reform and open policy is a transitional economic period. During this period, Chinese urban social economic life, as well as the urban spatial structure is changing dramatically. Under this special background, the thesis select Wuhan city as the case to conduct the economic study on the changes of the urban spatial structures of Chinese cities, especially Wuhan city.The thesis was divided into 2 parts. The first part is theoretical study and second part is case study.In the theoretical study, the thesis first introduced the connotation of the urban spatial structure and description method of it; then, basic theory and model of urban spatial structure was introduced; last, the relationship between transitional economy and urban spatial structure was discussed generally.The case study is the focus of the thesis. First, the author looked back on the evolution history of Wuhan city's urban spatial structure; then, characteristics of changes of Wuhan city's urban spatial structure, especially land use structure and layout under the transitional economy were discussed and its economic analysis was specially emphasized; lastly, on the base of the summary of problems and challenges faced with Wuhan city's spatial structure, corresponding policy suggestions on the upgrade of Wuhan city's spatial structure were presented.
