Supervisor: Professor Liu Yong-gong.The authors systematically analyzed the current status and functions of township agricultural extension system in Nanjing Municipality. The constraints and challenges faced by the grass-root level extension services have been also identified.Based on the survey data and second hand data analysis, following conclusions have been drawn:1 , The township agricultural extension service has played very important roles in introducing new technologies, demonstration and information service to farmers;2, As the quick development of the rural institutional reform, such as reducing the agricultural tax, merging and integration of the township organizations, reducing the staff, the current extension service at township level is increasingly facing the challenges. Its service capacity, staff qualification, physical facilities, service methods and not meet the demand of the quick development of the rural economy;3, The constraints faced by township extension service include: public service and commercial service functions are not separated, shortage of funds, lower qualification of extension agents, insufficient service capacity, etc.Based on the above findings and conclusions, relevant recommendations for strengthening the functions and capacities of the extension services have been made.
