Research Of Poverty Caused By Environment In Lancang Region Of Yunnan Province

The living condition and ecological environment in Lancang region of Yunnan province affect the position of China in the Southeast Asia free trade area. The study is to analyze the poverty, caused by environment, in Lancang region of Yunnan province, and find out the inducement to cause the vicious cycle of poverty and environment, and bring up the integrated methods for protecting environment and eliminating poverty.The research selected three villages of three counties respectively in up reach, middle reach, and low reach in Lancang region for case study. Participant rural appraisal (PRA), capacity and vulnerability analysis (CVA), sustainable livelihoods approach (SLA) and SWOT analyses are adopted in the paper.By analyzing the villagers' main living characteristics and their own perception towards poverty, and the obvious factors to influence women's poverty, and the local environment characteristic, we find that the inequality degree of people's low income and the vicious cycles existing between poverty and environment, because of some inducement.The research concludes as follows: Poverty caused by environment should be treated respectively, because of different types; Population pressure, the acquirability of natural resources, the main landform factors and the climate condition are the main causes to determinate the poverty of Lancang region in Yunnan province; Increasing of villager's labor intensity (land productivity descent, labor time extension) caused by environment degradation is the important factor to cause the poverty; the living environment determinates the villagers' ability to enter the market, and also causes poverty or richness in some extent; Poverty is pricked up, because traditional alternate planting and herding in some ethnic minority region coexists with the government's extension system and the environmental protection policy.
