In the second half of 1990's, overall reforms on management system are carried out in universities, and so are rear service reforms. Thus the goal to separate rear service group from university administration is achieved, and a rear service system is established, which means a form of total business management. As a rear service leader under the management model of planning economy, how to fulfill the assigned task accordingly is the most important concern. There is little concern over the matter of development plans except certain concrete indexes on the increase in production and sales higher than the previous year, not to say operation and development strategy of the group. In order to make university rear service group adapt to the market economy environment and to excavate its potential, by using relating business strategy management theories, the writer of the thesis cites Xihua university rear service group operation strategy as an example to probe into a proper operation strategy in rear service groups in all colleges and universities.The thesis consists of three parts: In the first chapter basic facts and history of development and current operation strategy in university rear service groups are introduced. In the second chapter, by using business strategy management theory, the internal and external environment of rear service groups are analyzed and advantages and disadvantages of the business development are pointed out. In the third chapter specific strategies of Xihua University rear service group as scale strategy, diversification strategy, innovation strategy and competition strategy are analyzed and employed to probe into the direction of business operation development.By consulting reference data and on-the-spot observation, existing problemsand and developing directions in the reform of rear service groups in university are analyzed. Research shows university rear service groups have vast room for further development. Being a service unity to university teaching, research and food and lodging, the means of investment and admission policy should be changed, other sources of investment should be admitted to create a more competitive environment. In terms of the rear service of Xihua University, management should be strenghtened, cost lowered, quality improved in order to cultivate its own brand.The difficulty in the process of research is that data collecting is not easy due to some reasons. Meanwhile, the rear service group has been orgnized for only a short period of time, no mature operation system is formed, thus this research paper is just a probing one.
