The Competitive Advantage of Nations is one of the most famous works of Michael E Porter, which built a bridge between the theoretical literatures in strategic management and international economics, and provided the basis for improved national policies on competitiveness. On the basis of this works, this thesis describes Porter's Diamond model and the stages of competitive development theories comprehensively and profoundly, and also summarizes the characteristics of these theories and points out some failures of them. The last parts put this theories into the analysis our country's economic development practice. The body of this thesis is devised into four parts. First introduces the background of the international economic competition and the debate of national competitiveness and Porter's study project and his achievements. The second part describes the main contents of Porter's national competitive advantage theory, elaborating on the diamond model and the stages of competitive development. The third part summarizes the characteristics of the subject theories through the comparative study. The fourth part firstly puts the diamond model and the stages of competitive development theories into the analysis our country's economic development practice, and expatiates the advantages and disadvantages of the key elements in China today. Secondly, the fourth part makes some suggestions to the scholars and policy-makers about the strategies for China to improve national competitiveness.
