Waterborne transportation has the quality of great load and low charge. It plays a key role in foreign trade. Ports are terminals of waterborne transportation where cargoes are loaded and unloaded and conveyances switch here, so it is absolutely unique and important in transportation system. Ports can accelerate regional economy and provide employments. Ports and national economy mutually interact: On the one hand national economy activities provide ports cargoes; On the other hand ports support social reproduction, meanwhile values are created depended on ports. The main purpose of this paper is analyzing the mutual relationship between port and economy development.Cargo sources come from social production, so national economy impacts port production directly. Economy development goes through three periods: the first one is former industrialization period; the second one is industrializing period; the last one is grown period. At every period there is a corresponding industry structure. The industry structure decides social production contents. Social production includes material production and service production. Transportation will be busier than before if material products increase, thus ports get added cargo. If service products increase, ports get much less cargo. Port throughput represents cargo volume that social production need ports transport if ports can deal with all arrival cargo, so analysis of economy impacting ports can base on port throughput data. Social economy impacts the volume of port throughput and cargo category of ports. Quantitative analysis of economy can base on GDP and port throughput data, because GDP is a key index of economy and port throughput is a key index of port production.Ports impact economy from two sides: one is adding value to society; another is assisting social production running. Basic port activities, such as load and unload activities, create value, and then this value is magnified in social reproduction circulation. A part of value that some companies created need be counted into port account book because these companies live on ports, such as port machine produce companies. Assistant function to social economy includes supporting social reproduction circulation and forming industry layout. The main works of the paper are: 1) qualitative analysis of economy impacting port production; 2) quantitative analysis of relationship between GDP and port throughput; 3) analysis of port impacting economy; 4) giving advice to port development of our country.
