Multi-party cooperation under CPC leadership (MCUCL) is one of the basic political systems with Chinese characteristics stipulated by the Constitution of our country. It is different from the multi-party system in Western countries, and from the single-party system in the former Soviet Union. We must firmly uphold this system, and at the same time, improve it according to the new situation. The party politics in today's world is undergoing important and profound change. The abrupt change of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe has particularly given us a warning. It is therefore time for strengthening the institutionalization of political parties.The central committee of CPC promulgated the Opinions on Upholding and Improving MCUCL (CPC-D 1989) in 1989. This milestone document has played an important role in institutionalization, standardization, and proceduralization of the multiparty cooperation in our country. However, there exist some problems in the development of this system: particularly, the backwardness and weakness in the research on this subject.
