With the development of economy and the progress of technology and science, human being achieves a resplendent success and faces the problems of resources, environment, energy and development as well. As a result, human being has to reconsider the relation between mankind and nature so as to realize the harmonious development between economy, society and environment. Sustainable development, which stresses the harmony of economic development and environment, has become the focus of every researcher all over the world. With the further study of sustainable development, the quantitative measurement of it, which determines the establishment and implement of strategies and the realization of sustainable development, becomes the key of the problem. As one quantitative way to measure sustainable development, Ecological Footprint becomes popular with its visual definition, ample connotation and easy manipulation. The ecological footprint mode, which was put forward by Canadian ecological expert Rees and Wackenagel in 1992,is to measure the human impact on the earth and judge whether the human load stays within global capacity. The ecological footprint of any defined population is the total area of ecologically productive land occupied to produce all the resources and services consumed and to assimilate all the wastes generated by that population. Based on ecological deficit or ecological remainder, we can judge whether the development of the area is sustainable or not. Compared with other methods, the ecological footprint indicator uses ecologically productive land rather than money, which is easily understood and used to count. According to the data from 1996 to 2003, based on the ecological mode, this paper calculate, analyze and predict the ecological footprint of Hunan Province, and draws conclusions as follow:(l) the existed ecological deficit showed that the economic development of Hunan Province from 1996 to 2003 was unsustainable and the increasing ecological deficit showed that gap was bigger and bigger;(2) the ecological capacity change of Hunan Province was not obvious and the increase of its ecological deficit was mainly caused by the increase of ecological footprint in which the consume of energy takes the main part;(3) the decreasing ecological capacity of erable land, which was mainly caused by the abuse of it,is the main cause which leaded to the...
