A sea-going shipping company wants to achieve the goal of "having safer shipping, cleaner ocean, and higher efficient and economic operation", in the age of high-speed development of modern science and technology, how to manage shipping occupies an important position. The Engine Room is called the heart of a ship, so the management of the Engine Room is most important to the development of this company. This paper carries on a deep study on a company by which what kind of management mode should be chosen to manage the Engine Room.At first, the paper studies the system of Marine Machinery and the management of it, points out that the system is composed of man, machine and environment, and demonstrates the importance of the management of Engine Room by examples and data.Secondly, the paper carries on a study on the management mode existing in E/R, and points out the shortcomings of ISM code. Then, the management mode of "man-machine" integrated marine machinery-Fourth Generation Management mode was put forward in this paper. Applying Fourth Generation Management to the Engine Room management on board ship, its core concentrates on quality, scientific method and integrative group team, which were needed in Engine Room. The three aspects depend on each other. At last, in virtue of the Analytic Hierarchy Process, comparing ISM code with Fourth Generation Management, the author reaches the conclusion by calculating and analyzing that Fourth Generation Management is better than ISM code. The conclusions drawn from the paper are valuable for engineers to manage the Engine Room, and at the same time, provide theoretic reference for engineers when choosing management modes.
