With the improvement of the economic development level and the urbanization level, the urban economic region has become the main organizational form of the regional economic space structure progressively. Just because of this, the study on urban economic region is becoming the important content of the research of international regional economy. According to some basic thoughts of urban economic regional study formed by domestic and international scholars, combining our country' s conditions, urban economic region can be defined as an area which is made up by one or several historic key cities and peripheral towns and districts, interdependently on the aspects of society, economy and environment, has integrated inclination objectively and has played an important role in trade, commerce and various kinds of exchange activities as a whole.During the process of the urbanization development in the modern world, it has formed a large number of theories correlating with urban economic region. These theories are concentrated in four aspects mainly. Firstly, the study on the metropolitan districts. There are " the Concentric-circles Area Theory ", " the Fan-shaped Area Theory ", "the Growth Pole Theory ", " the Core - edge Theory ", etc.. Secondly, the study on the urban system. Mainly there are "the Central Geography Theory ", "the Point-axle Progressive Spreading Theory ", " the Network-type Urban Theory ", etc.. Thirdly, the research on Megalopolis.
