With the development of times and advances of the military academy's teaching reform, the sound effects of military cadets'mental health education have been approved by the military and other social communities. But such field of study seems to be insufficient now, esp. the experimental study of mental health education. Considering the real situation of the frontier-defense Mongolian nationality military cadets, the author proposes an eight-week mental health education experimental plan. This plan illustrates a self-development model of certain military cadets'mental health education that includes: the center is self-esteem education; the means is to strengthen the sense of self-control and self-efficacy, to improve the self-confidence, and to develop the abilities of self-adjustment. This model is comprehensive that combines the community psychological training with the private counseling and some behavior training. From the experimental point of view, the aim is to establish the frontier-defense characterized mental health education model for the Mongolian nationality military cadets, and provide some useful references for the minority nationality military cadets'mental health education of the frontier-defense military academy. This study uses the method of stratified whole sampling to extract two-grade frontier-defense Mongolian nationality military cadets, altogether 77 military cadets as the subjects. The same experimenter carries out the same education plan to the two classes within 8 weeks and uses the Symptom Checklist 90 ( SCL-90 ) and the Self-Esteem Scale ( SES ) to test both beforehand and afterwards. The conclusion includes the following points:①some factors'scores are higher than the national adults'norm, and shows the significant grade-differences;②after the education, the level of the two-grade military cadets'mental health is more or less improved higher than before. For the sophomores, the scores of obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity and gross score factors have been reduced very significantly than before-test (P < 0.01), the scores of depression, anxiety, hostility, psychoticism and the positive symptom number have been decreased significantly (P<0.05); while the freshmen's mental health have been improved by the scores'decreasing of both interpersonal sensitivity and psychoticism (P<0.05);③according to the results, both the gross score≥160 and the factor score≥2 and the factor score≥3 three indexes of the SCL-90 become obviously less than before-test;④the military cadets'self-esteem in this two grades has enhanced after the education, though the score doesn't reach the level of significance, however, it doesn't deny the validity of this study;⑤generally speaking, it is valid to carry out the self-esteem oriented self development mental health education model, and this model is more suitable to the sophomores;⑥considering the results of the study , we can get to know that the non-significance advance of cadets'self-esteem can make some factors'scores reduce significantly, so the improvement of the mental health doesn't need the significant advance of self-esteem. The function of self-esteem is indirect and vital to the mental health improvement.
