Police is a kind of special profession and policeman shoulder great responsibility and bound duty. In modern society, in which we are far from wars, the job of policeman is still among the dangerous ones."Bleeding and sacrificing at any time"is maybe the real picture to describe the current state of police. Besides, the imbalance between high pressure, heavy workload and low income, humble living condition is also an important factor leading to series of their psychological problems. This research focused on the policeman's job satisfaction. Job satisfaction is related to series of problems, such as job efficiency, positivity, resignation etc, and especially to mental health, ways of coping obviously. Through the investigation, I found some problems exist in policemen's psychology, and further tried to find some solutions according to those problems. This research aimed to discuss policemen's job satisfaction and its relevant factors, which was carried out by the method of questionnaire test and spot observation. I adopted revised questionnaire for policemen's job satisfaction (the reliability was checked byαcoefficient analsysis and the construct vadality was confirmed by exploring factor analysis), SCL-90 and simple ways of coping questionnaire to implement the investigation of job satisfaction and relevant factors. 316 policemen from police stations of Henan completed these inventories. Through T-test, multi-variable regression analysis, Multivariate analysis of variance, correlation analysis, I systematically analyzed the 7 demographical variables'(gender, age, rank, educational level, police type, length of service, marital status) influence to job satisfaction. In addition, the sophisticated relationships between job satisfaction, mental health and ways of coping were analyzed through the data. Last, I proposed immature solutions to the problems found on the basis of this research, to improve the policemen's job satisfaction and corresponding mental indicators. The following conclusions can be arrived at through this research.1. The policemen's job satisfaction level is significant low either as a whole or at its 5 dimensions respectively when compared with the norm. And the lowest is work treatment, the second is working condition, the third is working achievement, the leading and management the fourth, and the personal relation the fifth. 2. In this research, there existed obvious discrepancies on policemen's job satisfaction due to the differences of their age, rank, educational level, type of work, length of service, marital status respectively. Those policemen who worked 1 to 20 years and more than 20 years satisfied highly with their jobs, and the low satisfaction existed among those who worked for 2 to 20 years, and all these were demonstrated in"U"shape distribution. The same rule went on as far as age was concerned. The satisfaction was relatively high among those aged 20-25 and more than 40. As for the factor of rank, higher the rank was, more satisfactory they were, among which junior clerks didn't satisfy much. As for the educational level, those policemen who had received high school education satisfied highly, while for those with college education background, their satisfaction was relatively low. In police system, obvious discrepancies existed among different police types. Those who work in legislative institute have a highest satisfaction, whereas as for those who work at inferior police station it was the lowest. The last factor is concerned marital status, single policeman satisfied with their work highly, while who is devoiced was not. And significant interaction effects among gender, age, rank, educational level, policeman type, working duration, marital status was found.3. Compared with the norm, policemen's mental health condition is comparatively lower. And this deficiency can be observed at any dimension of the 10 dimensions of SCL-90 such as somatization, obstinacy, interpersonal relation sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobia, paranoid, psychoticism. The correlation coefficient showed that policemen's mental health is tightly related to their job satisfaction. The 5 factors of the SCL-90 including anxiety, depression, phobia, interpersonal relation sensitivity and hostility can be looked as predicting variables to job satisfaction to construct a multiple linear regression model. And the 5 factors can be lined as anxiety, depression, phobia, interpersonal relation sensitivity and hostility according to their predicting power from highest to lowest. Policemen's performance of positive coping was lower than the norm, and accordingly their score of negative coping was higher than the norm. As can be expected, the correlation between policemen's job satisfaction and the score of negative as well as positive coping are significant.
