As one of the elements that compose nontraditional security threats, piracy has a deep influence on sea transportation all over the world. With the impact of the end of the Cold War and the Southeast Asian financial crisis, pirating activities in Southeast Asia run rampant again and have shown new characteristics, it brings harm to the Asia-Pacific region's peace and economic development. This thesis mainly gives a comprehensive analysis of the history, current situation and reasons of piracy in Southeast Asia as well as its impact. It also states the international actions of fighting against piracy in Southeast Asia and China's countermeasures. The whole thesis is composed of three parts, the introduction, main body and brief conclusion.The main body consists of three parts:The first part explores international piracy and related legal issues. Perfection of international law of piracy crime is very important measures to fight against the rampant piracy.The second part fully understands the current problem of piracy in Southeast Asia through the analysis of the history, current situation and reasons of piracy in Southeast Asia as well as its impact.The third part states the international actions of fighting against piracy in Southeast Asia and China's countermeasures. The international actions of fighting against piracy in Southeast Asia can be divided into two aspects: one is the cooperation among the Southeast Asia countries, and the other is the cooperation between Southeast Asia countries and countries in the Asia-Pacific region whose interests are related to the pirating activities. China should be active in the international joint action of fighting against piracy crime, respect the sovereignty of countries along the coast, cooperate with other countries to maintain the maritime security of Malacca Strait, balance the influence of other big countries in Southeast Asia, and make sure a secure navigation channel in Southeast Asia.
