Philosophers have been researching the theory of alienation for a long time.Alienation is one of the important concepts of the Marxist philosophy.Since Marx's"Economic-Philosophy Manuscript in 1844"has been released,bringing the concept of alienation to the public and causing for concern.By analysising the production activities in the early capitalist society,Marx addressed"the theory of alienation of labor".Followed by Western Marxists who built new system in the succession of marx's theory of alienation of labor to show all the features in the late capitalist society.Marcuse is one of the Western Marxists who made a combination of different opinions on the issue of alienation.Since reform and opening up,market-oriented reforms have promoted the development of China's economy.But reform and achievements also brought out many problems,such as the alienation of labor in private economy,the blind pursuit of material interests of the people and the adverse values under the market-oriented economy and so on.To solve this series of problems promotes us to study the value of the theory of alienation in today's society. This paper aims to a comprehensive comparative study between Marx's theory of alienation and Marcuse's theory of alienation,pointing out the historical association and the difference, making an objective and comprehensive appraisal of Marcuse's and Marx's theory and exploring the development of the Marxist theory of alienation under the new conditions. Summing up both the gains and losses,and pointing out how to learn from their theories of alienation to overcome alienation in the process of building a socialist market-oriented economy in accordance with the actual situation in China.
