A Research On Relation Among The Personality, Coping Styles And Psychological Health Of New Prisoners

Objective To explore the personality,coping styles and psychological health of the male new prisoners.Methods The male new prisoners were tested with COPA-PI,SCL-90 and coping styles scales, and analyzed with statistical methods.Results 1.The scores of awareness,sympathetic,subordination,fluctuations, low self-esteem,criminal thinking than the national norm of prisoners.The scores of total and the factors of SCL-90 are significantly higher than the national norm of normal people.The male new prisoners with different educational degrees are significant different(F=5.493,P<0.01;F=4.912,P<0.01) in the factors of subordination and low self-esteem. crime terms are significant different(F=7.092,P<0.001;F=3.718,P<0.05) in the factors of fluctuations and low self-esteem.The male new prisoners with different crime types are significantly different(t=-2.080,P<0.05) in the factor of sympathetic factor.The male new prisoners with different crime frequencies are significant different(t=-2.323,P<0.05) in the factor of criminal thinking;The male new prisoners with different crime terms,former occupations,crime types and crime frequencies are significant different in withdrawal, rationalization, fantasy, self-blame and help.2. Fluctuation is significantly correlated with anxiety, interpersonal sensitivity,the total score (r=0.33,p<0.01; r=0.28,p<0.05; r=0.25, p<0.05).Low self-esteem is significantly correlated with interpersonal sensitivity (r=0.26, p<0.05).Anxiety is significantly correlated with interpersonal sensitivity, phobia, anxiety (r=0.26, p<0.05;r=0.22, p<0.05;r=0.23,p<0.05).Violent tendency is significantly related with somatization, depression (r=0.30,p<0.01;r=0.24,p<0.05).Criminal thinking is significantly correlated with somatization (r=0.26,p<0.05);Rationalization, fantasy, self-blame and avoidance of coping style was significantly positively correlated with psychogical health.Help is significantly negative correlated with psychogical health; Rationalization is significantly correlated with subordinate, fluctuation, impulsivity, vigilance, low self-esteem, anxiety, violent tendency, abnormal psychology and criminal thinking.Fantasy is significantly correlated with vigilance, anxiety, abnormal psychology and criminal thinking.Help is significantly positive correlation with extraversion, empathetic,and it is significantly negative correlated with fluctuation, low self-esteem, anxiety, violent tendency and criminal thinking. Self-blame is significantly correlated with vigilance.Violent tendency is significantly correlated with criminal thinking.3.Fluctuation and violent tendencies of the new Prisoners are effective predictors of their psychological health. Self-blame and avoidance are effective predictors of their psychological health. Fluctuation and violent tendency have an effect on interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, somatization and the total score through self-blame and adoidance.Conclusion The personality of the new prioners have an effect on their psychological health through coping styles.This result is great value to guide the future research on the change of personality, coping styles and psychological health of new prisoners in different time period.
