"Russia-Georgia conflict" is one of the most significant international issues that happened in the early 21st century. It not only embodies the helplessness and inability of small countries in front of great powers'struggle for sphere of influence, but also represents the comparison of comprehensive strength between Russia and the United States. It has not only worsened the turbulent situation in Transcaucasia, but also greatly influenced the foreign policy of Russia and the United States. As member states of the Commonwealth of the Independent States (CIS), South Ossetia and Abkhazia had been planning to be independent from Georgia for years, however, Georgia necessarily fought against this attempt and tries to solve the problem by force, which later became the cause of the Russia-Georgia conflict. The main reasons for this conflict are:the historical resentments between Russia and Georgia, the pro-American while anti-Russian attitude of the President Mikhail Saakashvili of Georgia, shrink of strategic space of Russia due to eastern expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and the "hurt" brought to the Russia because of the fact that the Western countries have recognized the Kosovo as an independent country."Russia-Georgia conflict", in essence, is the conflict of territory and national independence, and completely represents the game between Russia and the United States in the area of Transcaucasia. Full of petroleum resources and owning special geo-strategic advantage, Transcaucasia was struggled by Russia and the United States, which was fully embodied in the "Russia-Georgia conflict". In the course of the "Russia-Georgia conflict", the U.S. on one hand provided Georgia with money and support to contend with Russia, on the other hand condemned the Russia in public. Meanwhile, the rising Russia showed its unyielding attitude and said "NO" with action at first time in the conflict. From the perspective of "Russia-Georgia conflict" moving forward, the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia may not be changed. If Mikhail Saakashvili administration collapses, Georgia will strengthen its relationship with Russia again. Nowadays, although the contest between the America and Russia in Transcaucasia does not stop, due to Russia's hard-line stance, the United States has had a clear view of the strategic and geographic baseline of Russia after its rebound, which makes the United States have no choice but to reconsider its strategy towards Russia and try to ease the tension in the Russia-U.S. relation temporarily.
