According to "The Curriculum Standards for Chinese in the Full-time Compulsory Education", the core objective of teaching reading is to train students'independent reading skills, focus on their affective experiences, and create the good sense of language through abundant accumulation." It aims to produce students'independent reading ability and pay attention to their unique feelings and experiences. Therefore, the basic way of teaching reading reform is to enable students become their own master of reading. There are some problems existed in current novel teaching in junior high schools, like the fixed teaching pattern, boring and trivial teaching content and the dilemma that students love reading novels but hate novel teaching classrooms. This paper argues that through topic design, the three dimensions of the new curriculum could be effectively implemented and students'interest could be largely increased. By doing so, students can be the master of reading. The writer argues that the well designed topic could create the warm atmosphere of novel teaching, promote the role change of students and teachers and increase students'interests since it is in accord with their zone of proximal development. What's more, the well designed topics expand the breadth of novel teaching and change the traditional learning style as it can improve students'ability of appreciating literary works by focusing on the text and looking at the problem with multi-dimensional perspectives. Finally, the well-designed topics could dig the depth of novel teaching, train students'learning habits of inquiry and ask them to see the spirit of the fine. It also cherishes students'unique reading experiences and improves their analyzing ability.
