Chemistry Olympiad is a popular chemical competition over the world, which has a history for more than 30 years aboard. Chemistry Olympiad in China (the chemistry competition) began in 1984, and has been formed a multi-level structure from the region to the country. The fundamental starting point for the chemistry competition is to promote quality education in middle schools. The basic proposition is to investigate the ability of cogitation, and it is based on the combination of chemical content of the natural growth point, as well as chemistry teaching in both high schools and universities.While highlighting the selection function, the chemistry competition plays a good role in inspiring students interested in chemistry, promoting the reform of education and improving the scientific literacy of students. Simultaneously, it makes a significant contribution to training highly qualified personnel for the 21st Century.This paper discusses what scientific literacy is, and on this basis elaborates the basic connotation of students'science literacy, pointing out that it contains the correct scientific view, excellent scientific quality, scientific knowledge, scientific method and science practical ability. Scientific practical ability is the core of scientific literacy, and the research on scientific literacy training also meets the requirements of the innovative spirit and practical ability. This paper compares the results of education reform program and student scientific literacy's development in other countries, such as the USA and Germany. In addition, this paper tries to find the way to cultivate students'science literacy, from the following aspects, Interest in learning, the quality of scientific thinking, ability of learning, sense of cooperation and capabilities of experimental. The research of scientific literacy training in the chemistry competition can guide chemistry teaching, train students'ability of Independent learning and lay the foundation for other subject learning, which improves the scientific literacy of students.
