Reading is the uppermost capability of people obtaining knowledge and increasing ability. reading ability is the foundation and core of learning capacity. Many studies have demonstrated the primary period is the critical period of obtaining language and developing thinking. Grade five or six years before is the stage of students' reading ability improving steadily,after grade five and six, students' reading ability slows down;so the primary period is the crucial time of cultivating and developing students'reading ability, while Chinese plays an important role in raising elementary student's reading ability, But now the current situation of pupils chinese reading ability isn't optimistic. So, Exploring the structure and development characteristics of pupils chinese reading ability and find the key age of developing pupils chinese reading ability is extremely urgent.In this study, choosing 9~12 pupils in shenyang as the research object, By documents checking and interviewing method, we prepared from multi-angled multi-level pupils chinese reading ability questionnaire with better reliability and validity,In order to offer effective study tool for further investigation, on the basis of the results of this survey, we investigate the situation of pupils chinese reading ability,analyse the structure and development characteristics of pupils chinese reading ability using analysis of variance,Independent sample t test,correlation analysis,and propose a series of advice and countermeasures to improve pupils chinese reading ability,meanwhile it supplys possible referrences for first teachers, Improves the teaching quality of primary language and promotes pupils all-round development. The conclusions are as follows:(1)Pupils chinese reading ability has multi-factors, by means of explorative factor analysis,we find out pupils chinese reading ability contained the ability of perception, comprehension, commentary, learning, reading interest, reading habit.(2)The questionnaire we established which is about 9~12 pupils chinese reading ability had high reliability and validity.(3)The overall development level of 9~12 pupils chinese reading ability in shenyang is in good.(4)There is significant difference in Grade pupils chinese reading ability, with the growth of grade, pupils chinese reading ability is increasing,the third grade is the critical period of developing pupils chinese reading ability.(5) the schoolgirls' chinese reading ability is much better than the schoolboy. There are significant differences in perception ability, reading interest, reading habit.(6)There is significant difference in three different levels of schools, key school is much better than medium and ordinary school.
