Interpersonal harmony is one of the important indicators to assess people's mental health. Throughout previous studies,it is found that they only treat the college freshman as a whole with identical traits, regardless of the differences from school to school.Upon this, the freshmen in Changshu Institute of Technology were selected as subjects, focusing on the characteristics of their interpersonal relationships. The questionnaires were directed at 960 freshmen randomly chosen, enrolled in 2009, and 847 valid copies were collected, the reclaiming-ratio is 91.47%.The analysis is based on the general diagnosis scales of the interpersonal relationship redacted by Zheng Richang, which is used to measure the characteristics of relationships.Measurable data from the analysis were analyzed with SPSS 13.0. The conclusions run as follows:Firstly, the interpersonal distress falls into four categories:the conversation distress, the sociality distress, the communication-skill distress and the isomerism-intercourse distress according to the general diagnosis scales of the interpersonal relationship.Secondly, only children have significant differences in the sociality distress and the communication-skill distress with non-only-children; male and female students are different in the communication-skill distress and the isomerism-intercourse distress;rural and urban college students with the opposite view in distress, the sociality distress, the communication-skill distress and the isomerism-intercourse distress.A detailed discussion on how to improve the interpersonal skills of the science and engineering students is covered from the aspects of the students themselves, their families, their schools and society, aiming to improve interpersonal communication skills of the college freshmen.
