This paper discusses the importance of cultural awareness in the process of reading teaching, and proposes a new type of reading material for English teaching which aims to cultivate the cultural awareness and cultural reading ability of middle school students. In China, more and more researchers began to express the importance of culture in English reading to the Chinese learners. However, the studies on the effect of cultural reading teaching with reading material are rare, if ever directed at middle school students. Icon literature as a kind of reading material is also seldom recommended by some scholars, and the role of Icon literature as English reading material is to foster the effect of Chinese cultural reading teaching.The thesis reviews the theory about reading and cultural awareness as the basis of the research and further analysis, and a questionnaire based on this after the interview with some students. It starts with a view of the present situation of culture teaching, especially those problems in culture teaching. The questionnaire reveals that most learners take a relatively negative attitude to English culture teaching and the main reasons for this according to the survey are the lack of interesting reading materials, which enlightened by the fact that enough evidence has shown that Icon literature is an effective reading material in improving culture reading ability to the students in junior middle school. According to the above analysis, the author suggests using Icon literature to cultivate and improve the students'culture reading ability. And the author of this thesis carried out a 3-month experiment with a group of junior middle school students in Lu Xia Middle School in Nan Ping utilizing Icon literature in the elective reading classes. The result of this experimental class'achievement was later compared with the control group that had normal English classes as a contrast. The data collected indicated that learners exposed to Icon literature gained relatively higher reading ability in English reading learning.
