The controversy of Lev Tolstoy's educational thought has been always existed from the beginning of birth to now, and it is also misunderstood by others. This article is based on affirming his education thought to study. The topic of this thesis is that although he is from noble family, Tolstoy is an outstanding civilian educator, not only because he makes a significant contribution to education theory, but also he has rich educational practice. Education objects are pointing to the civilians in Russian society.Besides the introduction and conclusion, the whole article is divided four parts. In the preface, we elucidate the reasons and significance of thesis project selection, research review at home and abroad, research methods, research object, and so on.The first part analyses the foundation and source of Tolstoy's civilian education thought. Ideological basis include his political views, philosophy, religion; Ideological source include universal love spirit, influence by tutors, Rousseau and other people, what does he see, hear and feel on the trip abroad.The second part discusses the main body of Tolstoy's civilian education though, including freedom education and teaching thoughts. Freedom education contains the definition of education, degree of free, education right, etc; teaching theory include the essence of teaching ideas, principle of teaching, teaching content, teaching method, etc.The third part introduces his education practice that he launches the civilian education. This part mainly contains running schools for three times, starting Yasnaya Polyana education magazine, and compiling spelling-book.The fourth part is to evaluate the Tolstoy's civilian education though, including the influence of Russia social reform, and the revelation to our education reform.
