Under the theoretical guidance of pedagogy, social psychology, and educational psychology, this thesis attempts to investigate college students? cheating in examinations (CSCIE) and analyze various reasons for this phenomenon, by means of questionnaire, case study, interview, on-the梥pot observation, and literature analysis. 1.Introduction During China抯 transformational period from planned economy to market economy, college students?cheating in examination has become a serious problem in higher education. However, systematic research on this matter has seldom been seen. This thesis aims to uncover flaws in college testing system, explore the social psychological factors of CSCIE, and put forward convincing explanations to the problem. 2.Literature Review Individual student抯 violations of examination rules, such as note-smuggling and plagiarism, is called examination cheating, while joint cheating is behaviors including the examinees?collusion with someone outside the exam room, and examinee-invigilator joint cheating. Cheating both inside and outside the exam room is a long-standing issue, which can date back to the Tang Dynasty (618?07) when examination cheating was called Xingjuan (a kind of cheating, specifically, bribing examiners). Later, examinees with money or power, bribed the examiners, smuggled books or articles into the exam room and plagiarized, or asked others to substitute for them in the examinations. Even today, collective cheating can often be seen. Since 1990s, CSCIE have extended from senior to freshmen, from single-handed to joint-handed, and even from inside the examination room to outside. 3.Evidential Research Investigation on CSCIE is carried out by means of questionnaires, case studies, interviews and on-the-spot observations. The data are analyzed by SPSS; and then students?opinions about design, invigilation, and mark of I ~Z& 4~Z~ examination are summarized; finally reasons for students?cheating are inferred. 4.Theoretical Explanations CSCIE, though forbidden, is still overwhelming. The reasons for this phenomenon lie in the following three aspects: i . Examination rules are not perfect, to be specific, testing items on the paper are lack of creativity or relatively not dIfficult; it is unfair that all the invigilators do not exercise examination disciplines as strictly; perpetuation of examiners?standards for grading papers leaves some students to the ideas of leaving things to chance; as the punishment for the cheating students is too severe, examiners may show mercy when catching a cheating red-handed. ii. There exists social basis for CSCIE. The practice of the unique importance of exam achievement results in 揷heating for passing the exam? under the influence of unbalanced distribution of social wealth and the rampant social malpractice, values of some students tend to be utilitarian; and therefore, there occurs collective cheating. iii. CSCIE should also be attributable to students?twisted motives for achievement. Both let-thing-drift mentality of inferiority and pass-or-doom gambling mentality induce cheating in examinations. In the particular situation of examinations and under the pressure of taking examinations, whether...
