The 21th century is a period during which information enlarges rapidly. All this has brought us an unprecedent chance for communication and cooperation. Without the aid of language, communication can only be a useless talk. Nowadays, English is showing its unmatched advantage in communication.At present English teaching in primary schools is in its starting stage. Its development is the necessary process to the further reform of teaching, to the whole round quality-oriented education and to the realization of the three "Towards".The language learning theory has verified: Childhood is the crucial period of time for language learning. Once it is missed, the learning will be very difficult.According to the document made by the National Educational Department, from the autumn of 2001 on, English will be taught in urban primary schools all over the country.From the autumn of 2002, English will be taught in rural primary schools, the starting grades are Grade 3.The study of Foreign Language Teaching esp. English Teaching in primary schools has been an important project for the educators. Although the study in our country has made much progress, compared with the other countries, it's still a bit later, less developed. This thesis is the investigation into the current teaching situation of English teaching in certain rural primary schools. Other methods are used as auxiliary such as observation and talking. The thesis discusses the necessity of English teaching, analyzes the main problems and the causes, finally,gives some tentative measures.Chapter I covers the background of the English spread and relevant rules. Chapter II introduces the theories on English teaching in primary schools such as small-class teaching and motivation. Chapter III investigates the four factors in primary school English teaching: student, teacher, teaching material and outer condition and analyzes the causes of the problems. Chapter IV gives the respective solutions, they are: small-class teaching; how to foster the students' motivation; how to excel the teachers sources; how to use the teaching materials creatively; how to improve the teaching equipment; how to strengthen the executive management.
