Postmodernism does not mainly mean a historical period, but signifies a kind of mode of thinking. The mode of thinking emphasizes denial, eccentricity, fragment, uncertainty, discontinuousness, and multiplicity. And it has provides us with a brand-new angle of research into the outlook on modern education.The article concentrates on criticism and reconstruction of the outlook on modern education. The main contents of the article can be divided into four parts:The first part deals with the theory of postmodernism on the whole. First of all, the author analyzes its social realistic foundation and theory origin. And then, the main characteristics of the postmodern mode of thinking have been delineated. At last, from the influence of postmodernism to the contemporary western education and to the development of our education, the author points out the function of postmodernism to our education reform.In the second part, postmodernism criticizes modern educational concept from three respects. Firstly, it criticizes the aims of modern education. It points out the implication of the modern perfect- person education, analyzes the danger caused by it, and probes its main causes. Secondly, according to postmodernism, modern education sets up a relation of dichotomy between curriculum and teaching. Then the author analyzes the main reasons that have caused the phenomenon. Thirdly, in the light of postmodernism the modern teacher-student relationship is not educative. The article analyzes the condition of modern teacher-student relationship and explores the root cause.The third part mainly discusses that the postmodernism reconstructs our outlook on education. In agreement with the second part, this part introduces the reconstruction of our outlook on education from three respects. Firstly, the article introduces foundation of reconstructing the aim of modern education, and generalizes the aims of postmodern education. Secondly, to the relation between curriculum and teaching, postmodernism thinks, it should be a kind of organic, coherent relation and can be summarized in the new term of course-teaching. Then the article deals with the implication of course-teaching and requirements of bringing it about. Thirdly, the article brings out the meaning of postmodern teacher-student relationship and conditions of realizing it.The fourth part points out the great function that postmodernism can perform to modern education.
