Teaching in different levels is one of the popular points that were put practice in foundational education of China. This article recalls the problems of theory and practice of teaching in different levels. Based on the foundation of overview, the writer discusses its situation at home and abroad.Teaching in different levels was not an accidental teaching form that came into being in 1868. In fact, it was a must of the development of educational philosophy that has broad foundation of psychology, philosophy and pedagogy. Whenever it was at home and abroad, it did not develop smoothly at first. It experienced the original birth, little development and decadence. Till now, it flourishes in many forms. Overall, the history of teaching in different levels is a wealth of history on the form. Not only has it the form separating grades, it also has the form not separating grades. Not only has it the form that splits the grades and groups, it also has the personalized form totally. The practice of its scope spreads over the world. At the same time, the theory and practice of it becomes scientifically and personally.The aim to recall its present situation and history is to help us retrospect on it. The writer mainly thinks it over from many angles: the concept, aim and criterion. The main points follow: Teaching in different levels is not only a kind of teaching form but also a kind of personalized way based on the students' difference under the form of class teaching.Because of that, it decides we need to attention the students' difference and their subject value from aim, criterion and contents. To the recognition of aim, it focuses attention on the "Development Goodness" and "compensating shortcoming" at the same time. For this, during the practice of teaching in difference levels we need to make the teaching aim variable, we should be against that kind of teaching which only encourages "Future Goodness". To the criterion of it, we need consider the standards suited to the time and zone because of the complexity of measurement and evaluation on personality. To the contents of it, we need put that kind of approach into practice, which can show variability and difference. We should be against the teaching form that takes the students in one way and focus attention only on the development of intelligence.There still have many problems which need to be solved in the theory and practice of teaching in difference levels. We need to have future study on them.
