Prose is a literary form which is full of feelings. In the teaching of reading, we often ignore the factor of circumstances and deal with reading materials as follow: explanation, introduction of background, summing up the main ideas of paragraphs and the central idea and its writing characteristics. Sometimes, we give students much practice, replacing the explanations of the text. This kind of teaching makes it a big problem to cany out modem prost reading in our teaching of Chinese, which results in the fact that students can't get good marks in reading comprehension in the NMET. In this article, based on the achievements of the experiment about present circumstances teaching, together with the characteristics of prose and Marx's philosophy principle about the relationship between circumstances and human beings, I advise dealing with the modem prose reading bycircumstances teaching., This article mainly enumerates six tactics--using music toapply colours to circumstances; using words to describe; pictures to show circumstances and so on. In the experiments, circumstances and traditional teaching are earned out in two parallel classes. The results suggested that the atmosphere in the experimental class was lively and the students could fully understand the text.In my opinion, circumstances teaching is a good way to get students to have good aesthetic standards and enrich their feelings. In a word, using circumstances in prose reading is feasible kand effective and it is also a basic way to improve flie teaching of Chinese.
