Education reform and teaching quality largely depend on the effect of both teachers' and students' autonomy. Teachers' language proficiency, their beliefs in and attitudes toward the nature of teaching and learning, their teaching skills and techniques, as well as their ability of self-development are very important factors which affect the outcome of their teaching. Teachers are in great need of adjusting their own knowledge structures, adopting the new theories of language teaching and learning so as to improve their own teaching quality while trying their best to do the teaching work well. They should also be able to make necessary pedagogical research in their teaching practice.Obviously, language teachers' update ideas affect the teaching processes and their choice of teaching methods and strategies. It is necessary for teachers of English to be acquainted with some foreign language teaching theories and do some research work concerning language teaching. By doing this, teachers of English can develop a kind of awareness of reforming teaching methods that will facilitate their students in their learning.With the development of our country and its entrance into the World TradeOrganization, English teaching has greatly developed in recent decades. Therefore, teachers of English are obliged to improve their professional levels. If they want to improve their classroom teaching quality, they must study some related teaching theories and do some research into teaching practice. Only in this way can teachers of English effectively do their teaching work in class and develop their students' abilities and awareness of autonomous learning. If students can learn English autonomously, teachers of English can mitigate their teaching burden and pressure and students can improve their English learning efficiency and accelerate their learning process.However, how can teachers of English reinforce students' autonomous learning? This is one of the most important questions that teachers of English should solve eagerly at present. This article makes some research on the problem from theory to practice so as to prove the importance of students' autonomous learning.Based on those ideas above, this dissertation is concerned with the following points:1. Introducing some current conditions and problems of the English teaching in middle schools in our country;2. Reviewing learning theories that influence students' autonomous learning in detail both at home and abroad;3. Discussing some teaching models that teachers of English can accelerate students' autonomous learning;4. Describing some teaching cases on how to cultivate students' abilities of autonomous learning in class;5. Discussing the significance of reinforcing the abilities of students' autonomous learning.This dissertation has the purpose of constructing the autonomous teaching models for students' autonomy in accordance with middle school students' practical situations. Its aim is to improve the classroom teaching efficiency and promote students' autonomy of English learning so that teachers of English can lay a good foundation for students' life-long study.
