As the primary means of language input, listening plays a key role in the perception and learning of language. Listening is regarded as an important means as well as the main purpose of language learning. Listening is viewed as the foundation of the other language skills. However, traditional English teaching pays too much attention to the teaching of language knowledge rather than the cultivation of students' language abilities. As a result of the traditional language teaching, the teaching of listening in the secondary technical schools have been neglected. The teaching situation of listening in the secondary technical schools remains lagging behind, and the phenomenon of "deaf-mute" English among students is so serious that it has hindered the smooth going of English teaching. According to the previous documents, the available researches mainly focus on the teaching of listening in the middle school and in college. There is little research on the teaching of listening in the secondary technical schools. Nevertheless, as an important part of the whole listening teaching system, It is necessary to do the research on the listening teaching in the secondary technical schools. This article, byexploring its current situation and relevant problems, aims at construction of a comparatively perfect listening teaching system for the secondary technical schools so as to promote its teaching reform and improve the students' English listening proficiency.Listening comprehension is characterized by an active and complicated psychological process, which has been demonstrated by the schema theory and the information-processing models involving bottom-up, top-down and interactive models. While listening, learners are required to reconstruct and comprehend the meaning of the materials with the help of context and background knowledge as well as all sorts of strategies. The task-based approach provides a new model for the classroom teaching of listening.This paper does some researches on its current situation and related problems in the secondary technical schools, which is explored on the basis of literature review in this field and the author's ten years of teaching experience. There are many factors affecting the teaching of listening. This paper introduces and analyses the current situation and problems from the aspects of teachers, students, materials and teaching methods. Furthermore, the paper puts forward a series of strategies to optimize the English listening teaching of the secondary technical schools.The whole paper consists of six chapters:Chapter One briefly states the practical significance of the study and the organization of this dissertation.Chapter Two introduces the theoretical basis of this research. Presents a literature review, including the information processing models of listening, that is, bottom-up model, top-down model and interactive model, the schema theory and task-based approach.Chapter Three introduces and analyzes the current situation of English listening teaching in the secondary technical schools. It gives a general introduction to the current situation that English listening teaching in the secondary technical schools falls behind, and the students' level of listening is really low. This situation is resulted from manyreasons, and this chapter analyses the main reasons from the view of teachers, students, textbooks and teaching methodology.Chapter Four proposes the countermeasures of optimizing the English listening teaching in the secondary technical schools. It mainly proposes a tentative plan of optimizing teachers, students, textbooks and teaching methodology.Chapter Five focuses on the main listening skills and the classroom teaching of listening, and proposes a classroom training model of listening skills from the view of task-based approach.Chapter Six states the conclusion of the dissertation...
