Many things in the life of senior high school students may lead to stress on them , among which their academic performance plays an important part. In some schools students are categorized according to their scores and are divided into different classes , which are named top classes and average classes. Does this practice put stress on students ? What are the factors that influence them ?These are the subject this thesis will discuss. Before carrying out the research, the author of this thesis referred to the conclusions other researchers drew about the practice of classifying students according to their academic performance. Then in the form of survey, interview and analysis of specific cases, the author looked into the referred practice. The author studied the influence of the referred practice on three parties : the students who experience it, the students who witness it and the teacheres who are involved in it .In this way the author tries to reveal the reaction of the students and teachers involved to the referred practice and the cause of their reaction .The author came up with the result that the referred practice increases stress on the students and has negative effect on them .It is disapproved by the teachers for it has bad effect on their teaching .The division of top and average classes and letting some students enter top classes from average ones or letting some students leave top classes to enter average ones according to their scores after examinations are factors that lead to stress on students. The research also indicates that students experience varied stress and the students forced to leave the top class feel the greatest stress and they are also the students who experience the negative effect of the referred practice most strongly .However , all the students , including the students in top classes, the students who are forced to leave top classes and the students in average classes, all agree that the referred practice does harm to their development. Both the students from top classes and the ones from average classes feel the same stress from the referred practice , but the former are against the practice more strongly.
