College merging has distinguished itself as one of the important forms and measures to reform the higher educational system of China. The post-merging development, that is, the option of developmental patterns and strategies in the wake of merging, has been a momentous issue that many colleges involved have been considering and probing into. The research in this regard can draw on some influential theories and methods such as theories on market economy, laws of scientific and technological development, mechanisms of higher educational development, system science, theories and methods applicable to the modern strategic research, and general theories and views on the sustained development. Merging has provided a rare chance and platform for the development of participant colleges. Featuring development as the theme, these colleges are expected to macroscopically acquire the notion of seeking the scientific development that is comprehensive, co-ordinate and sustained. As far as the strategies are concerned, the university resulting from merging should formulate developmental plans realistically, analyzing and handling such relationships as those between structural mixing and mingling, centralized and decentralized administration, enhancing the outcomes of reform and pushing it ahead with the unabated effort, seeking external growth and stepping up the internal quality, and also between the short-term interest and long-term development. Meanwhile, stress should be shifted to quality enhancement, and priority given to the merging and growth of related subjects. Hurdles also occur in the way of development, among which are the problems concerning the management of previously independent colleges, the rearrangement of redundant staff, and the growth of specialized subjects like agriculture in the merged comprehensive. The settlement of these problems, for which no effective means are available at the point, requires the constant effort made by the merged universities to conduct researches, investigations and summarizations. With the goal clearly defined, the universities should give adequate weight to the process leading up to the fulfillment of the goal, work out ways for the building and overall development of the school, choose and carry out the favorable strategies, and place them at the core of school administration.
