A Preliminary Study On The Reading Literacy Of Primary And Middle-School Students

Reading literacy is one of the most important abilities students acquire as they progress through their early school years. It is the foundation for learning across all subjects, it can be used for recreation and for personal growth, and it equips young children with the ability to participate fully in their communities and the large society. So the improvement of primary and middle-school students' reading literacy is being paid more and more attention to worldwide. However, compared with the developed countries, students' reading literacy education in our country still needs strengthening. To make reading literacy known to all involved in students' reading Literacy systematicly and extensively, in mis article, first, the definitions of reading literacy in different programmes are stated and discussed. Then, several influential and leading students' reading literacy programmes in the world and their research are introduced and the practice of cultivating students' reading literacy is also presented. Furthermore, based on reference to the research and practice mentioned above, students' reading literacy education of our country is analyzed and the drawbacks, such as the lack of integrated ministration, the lack of investigation and research and the lack of instructors and reading courses, etc. are pointed out. At the end of the article, some suggestions are put forward, such as to set up organizations of our owe to administer the affairs, to make surveys of the development of the students' reading literacy in our country, to form a evaluating system, to train teachers and instructors and to supply more books and facilities, etc.
